The Italian Cooperation operates in Sierra Leone mainly in the health and emergency sectors; these priority sectors for the country's development strategy are integrated with those of the other cooperations present in the country.

Indeed, Italy has actively participated in the commitment to support peace, reconstruction and social and economic development in Sierra Leone. On a financial level, it participated in the international commitment to maintain the peacekeeping forces of the countries in the region (ECOMOG), the financing of the UNAMSIL mission and the World Bank program for disarmament, demilitarization and reintegration of ex-combatants. In addition, he helped support the work of the Special Court for Sierra Leone and assistance to the post-civil war child population.

Moreover, during the health crisis caused by the 2014-15 Ebola virus epidemic, funds were allocated to send medical personnel, medicines and equipment, and provide coordination and logistics support. Through bilateral initiatives and promoted by Italian NGOs in the country, care, prevention and training activities have been financed, as well as support for health structures consolidating the capacity of diagnosis, treatment, and containment of the Ebola virus infection.

More recently, to contribute to the prevention of future health emergencies, contributions have been approved on the bilateral and multilateral channel to strengthen the health system and health regulation in the country.
